June already!

Posted by The Kinley's , Monday, June 20, 2011 10:16 AM

And we are half way through the month!  We have had two harvests now consisting of greens, herbs, and radishes.  Thank you to everyone who has been out to help so far, it has been greatly appreciated.
This past week I owe a huge thanks to my wife, Emily as she worked a ton while I was sick.
The warm weather is supposed to start this week as well as having it dry out for us as we have been super wet for the last week.  At this point we are transplanting this week as we waited because of the weather and my being sick last week.  If you can come on up and help at any point, we would love to see you here :D
We have a wish list of items that if any one can assist us with we would be grateful and we can get you a tax deductible receipt.  That list includes a mower (push or riding,) a gas powered weed eater, two new dry erase boards, a new scale, a second wheelbarrow, chain link gates, firewood for fires at the fire pit.
Until next time, live better, eat well, and smile more!

The weather is breaking....

Posted by The Kinley's , Friday, May 13, 2011 11:06 AM

Which is really a funny term because it sounds as if the weather could break and be fixed.  Anyway, with the weather turning we have been outside working every possible chance.  It is always amazing that even when you feel like you accomplished a great deal one minute, you turn around and feel like nothing got done.  We always enjoy visitors so if you haven't been up this year to see us yet, please come on up and say hi.  We also always appreciate all the help we can get (hint, hint ;) )

A rainbow (now if we could only find the gold for the tiller!)

Sick and tired....

So we did not get our blog updated with info about working this weekend as we have had alot of sick children in the house and fortunately everyone is better now.  We are definitely working on Saturday REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER.  If you are available to help we have lots to do and would love to have you here!  If you e-mail us by Friday afternoon to tell us you are coming, we will even feed you!

We already have lots of vegetables planted, kale, turnips, beets, carrots, chard, radishes, peas and more to go!  See you all soon!

Planting and starts

Posted by The Kinley's , Tuesday, April 5, 2011 3:04 PM

Well here we are into April and everything is in motion.  Planting is under way and starts are coming along.  We have expanded to include a room in the house which is now an additional "greenhouse."
This year we will have honey, bread, occasionally organic eggs, and goats milk available to our members as additional options.  We are also working on beef and pork as well.

We are looking at a work part on Saturday April 16th and we will provide more details later this week, so mark your calendars and come out and meet your other members!  Well, that's all for now as it is back to work in the wind....

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2011 and an update for our blog and our season.  We finished the season with a total of 23 weeks of harvest even with 3 times the normal amount of rain in June.
We are now taking reservations for the 2011 season.  Pricing is $495 for a full share which will feed a family of four for 20-24 weeks beginning in June.  A half share is $310 for the same duration and will feed a family of 2.  We also have the option this year of a 20% refund at the end of the season for maintaining 2 rows for a full share and 1 row for a half share.  Please contact us for more details or to reserve your share as they are limited!  stizzysgarden@hotmail.com or 509-570-6940
Here are pictures from the end of last season and a few additions to the farm.   Until next time.

Warm weather brings....

Less weeds, more produce, and suddenly August!  The garden looks good, all of the tomatoes are producing fruit, we are harvesting beans, garlic, lettuce, swiss chard, carrots, beets, and herbs.  It is amazing at farmers markets the amount of greens and peas that are still showing up in August.  That is due to the long spring that went into June.
As always a few pictures of life here.

Oliver enjoying some fresh picked greens
1 full share laying on the table from last weeks harvest.

So how about a month since the last post!

Wow, a month already.  That makes our son Jonathan a month already as well.
We have finally started to get our warm weather which is helping out our crops for sure.  The area has had a long wet, cold spring that went into the month of June.  In fact we had almost 3 times the average amount of rain this month which put us over 3 inches!  This cold and wet has slowed down the warm weather crops with many in the region losing crops of corn, beans, tomatoes, etc...  We have lost a few rows of crops ourselves.  Fortunately we waited on the tomatoes as they were started in the greenhouse.
This past Tuesday we had our first cookout of the season for our members and it went well!  We had about 30 or so people here for food and chance to sample some wines from Townshend Winery.
The recent harvest include garlic scapes, beets, radishes, turnips, various lettuces and greens, radishes, swiss chard, cilantro, chives, and peas.
As always we are in need of help with planting, weeding, and on Tuesdays harvesting.  If you have any time at all, please we would love to have you spend it with us.  We rely on volunteer help so we can keep our costs to a minimum.
Until next time, eat well, smile more, live better.
